LENNON IN LEGO
New York, NY (November 14, 2005) – To commemorate John Lennon’s tragic death 25 years ago this December 8, LEGO® artist, Nathan Sawaya, has created a unique representation of Lennon. Sawaya used LEGO bricks to emulate Lennon’s famous self-portrait which the former Beatle sketched of himself in 1968.

The piece is suspended on almost non-visible strings which gives visitors, at first glance, the illusion that Lennon's face is floating in the air. Sawaya employed the bright LEGO palette to create each part of Lennon's face separately, adding a rainbow effect to the work.

“I wanted to create a piece that gave more depth to Lennon’s signature self portrait. I felt by suspending the piece in mid-air, it suggests that John is more reachable. By allowing one to physically put their arm through his portrait, this piece allows visitors to figuratively pass through John,” said Sawaya.

Sawaya, whose works are displayed in a variety of locations throughout the country, has been a professional LEGO artist for three years and a Beatles fan for his entire lifetime.
